HELLO, WELCOME!

THINKING OF MOVING
TO THE US?

INTRODUCTION

There are many good things about living in the U.S.  There may be fully valid motives for immigrating to the U.S.

You´ll find cheaper prices for consumer items, like electronics and cars.

You may dream of living in a cute middle-class home in a neighborhood with no walls.

Many of you may move to the US, achieve your goals, and be happy!

That said, many Brazilians who immigrate to the U.S. may face adversities.

You may face issues of ethnic identity – that is, you may be considered Hispanic or Latino when you don´t identify with these categorizations.

You may feel prejudice and discrimination.

And you may suffer mentally, with anxiety or by getting depressed.

PREJUDICE & DISCRIMINATION

Brazilians who move to the United States should be aware that they may face prejudice and discrimination.

RACIAL IDENTITY ISSUES

In addition to being immigrants, Brazilians in the United States tend to be seen by the

American mainstream as Hispanics/Latinos.

MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES

Brazilians living in the United States may feel the burden and the

consequences (in terms of mental health) of being immigrants, and

may incorporate negative stereotypes about themselves.

Minority groups such as Latino immigrants are highly vulnerable to

experiencing social discrimination, and they have difficulty finding and

receiving quality mental health services.
